Very exciting, and the beta bodes well for an equally lively 2007. What this mode provides is the ability to run Windows applications on your Mac machine as if its a native Mac application. It's the tool that Virtual PC wanted to be but never truly was: a genuine productivity solution for cross-platform work and a real argument for the success of the Mac in enterprise environments. The remarkable thing about the Parallels story is that a program that nobody in the Mac world had heard of before April of this year has become, in only eight months, not only a best-of-breed virtualization tool but also a strategically important product for the entire Mac platform. If you have an Intel Mac with enough RAM and an XP2 license, and you haven't tried it yet, you should. The beta is available free for download from Parallels' forums. Now Adam Pash at Lifehacker has done a pretty complete runthrough of setting up Coherence mode for best effect, including proper desktop config and some strategies for launching Windows apps from the Dock. Personally, when I am on the road, I am much happier carrying only a single laptop. We've already covered the insanely feature-rich Parallels beta, including Scott's post on the new Coherence (Windows apps on the Mac desktop) mode. Coherence is one of the four ways to view Parallels Desktop. ![]() Now, if your workflow is such that some says you are at your desk working in Windows, and some days you are at your desk working in Mac, then two separate machines may be the best solution. It's a reasonable question to ask, and there are reasonable answers.Ĭonsider someone who needs to run a mix of Mac and Windows applications. ![]() To switch to the Coherence mode: Click the icon on the toolbar, or Choose Coherence from the View menu, or Press Shift+Ctrl+Alt keys. With Windows PCs available for next to nothing, both new and refurb, with Windows pre-installed (you know Windows is not included with either emulator, right?), please, someone provide me with justification for not just buying a cheap PC to run your QuickBooks Pro, or some other application not available on MacOS? Only a running virtual machine with Parallels Tools installed can be switched to the Coherence mode. While the VM’s windows have 'flown the coop' and no longer display within the desktop window, that desktop window does continue to exist. Sure you can do it, but in the words of my late mother, "JP, just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you SHOULD." Mom was wise. 1 Answer Sorted by: 4 Choose Exit > Coherence To get out of the now-active 'Coherence' mode, bring the 'desktop' window to the front.
